Bio

Dr. Mark Borzi is a professor in the Department of Communication Arts at Valdosta State University. He previously served for twenty years as a faculty member at Eastern Illinois University, 12 of those years as Department Head. He served as the Department Head at Valdosta University for more than seven years.

The central part of his efforts as Department Head, other than running the department, was dedicated to improving departmental communication and work processes, upgrading department technology and developing study abroad programs. He assisted in bringing almost $800,000 to the department for academic research, technology projects, service learning, and graduate assistantships. He created multiple study abroad programs in Australia, New Zealand, and Barbados and participated in programs in Ireland and Greece.  

Dr. Borzi’s primary teaching interests include organizational communication, teams and leadership, communication literacy, human communication, and the capstone experience. His primary instructional methods reflect a strong commitment to experiential learning involving project-based and competency-based approaches.

Current research interests include bullying, communication literacy, classroom design, technology, communication, communication pedagogy, intergenerational conflicts in the classroom, and the future of higher education. He has published twelve academic articles, 20 proprietary publications, and authored 52 convention papers.

Dr. Borzi received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University and his Bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University. He worked at Eastern Illinois University for 20 years. He joined the faculty at VSU in 2014.  

Before EIU, Dr. Borzi worked at the University of Hartford in the Human Resources Department, where his portfolio included training and development, employment, employee communications, and continuous quality improvement. He started a Web design company and served as the President and Chief Operating Officer for five years.

He also taught classes at the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut, Central Connecticut State University, Marshall University, and Owens Technical College.  

Dr. Borzi conducted over 200 training programs on a broad range of programs for State agencies and Fortune 500 companies on local, regional, national, and international levels.

Dr. Borzi enjoys photography, traveling, walking, collecting coffee mugs, and reading science fiction in his spare time.

He and his wife Cate live in Valdosta, and he has two children, Anna and Drew, and two grandchildren, Jamal and Miracle.
